Solar Panel Detach & Reset in Colorado
When You Need a Detach & Reset
Detach and reset isn’t maintenance — it’s a project. Most homeownersneed it when something else is happening with the roof:
- Roof Replacement — New roof going on and panels need to come off safely first
- Hail or Storm Damage — Roof repairs required underneath the existing solar array
- Leak Repairs — Roof leak located under or near panel mounting points
- System Reconfiguration — Changing panel layout for additions, battery storage, or aesthetics
- Panel Upgrades — Replacing older panels with newer, higher-output modules
- Insurance Claims — Insurer requires panel removal to assess or repair roof damage
What Happens When It’s Done Wrong
Having unqualified people remove and reinstall solar panels creates risksthat don’t show up until weeks or months later.
Voided Warranties — Improper handling can void panel and inverter warranties.Manufacturers require trained handling.
Hidden Damage — Panels can be micro-cracked during removal without visible signs. These cracks expand and kill output months later.
Electrical Hazards — Incorrect reconnection creates risks including ground faults, arcfaults, and fire.
Roof Penetration Issues — Improper remounting can compromise roof waterproofing at everyattachment point.

My roofer says he can just take the panels off himself. Should I let him?
No, and this is a common expensive mistake. Removing and reinstalling solar panels isn't roofing work — roofers don't have the electrical training, the lift equipment, or the labeling system to put a 14-20 panel array back exactly where it was. When roofers do it anyway, you end up with damaged panels, shifted alignment, miswired strings, and a system that produces noticeably less afterward. Any modification by someone other than a qualified solar contractor likely voids the manufacturer warranty too. -
How long will my system be off?
Small systems (10-12 panels): about 3 days total — one day to detach, the roofer's window, one day to reinstall. Medium systems (14-20 panels): about a week. Larger or more complex: 2-3 weeks. The biggest variable is your roofer's schedule, which is why we sync with them on both ends — panels off when they need to start, back on as soon as they finish. -
How much does detach and reset cost in Colorado?
Typical residential range is $1,500-$3,000. Per-panel: $100-$200. A 14-16 panel system on a standard pitched roof usually lands around $2,800-$4,800. Larger or steeper systems, multi-array layouts, or sites with hard roof access can go higher. The estimate is free and the price is locked before we start. -
If my roof is being replaced because of hail damage, will insurance cover the detach-and-reset too?
Usually yes. If the reroof is part of an insurance claim, the panel removal and reinstall is typically included as part of restoring the property. Insurers actually prefer it done by a solar contractor, because amateur removal creates more claims down the line. We're used to working with adjusters — we'll give you a written scope you can submit, and we coordinate with your roofer on timing. -
Where do the panels sit during the roof work?
On padded racks at your property, covered, in a spot you and the roofer agree on — garage, side yard, driveway corner. Each panel is labeled with its original position so it goes back exactly where it came from. We don't pile them in a heap or leave them exposed. -
Do you actually coordinate with my roofer, or am I project-managing two companies?
We coordinate. Once you tell us who the roofer is, we set the detach date with them directly and lock in the reset date the same way. You shouldn't have to relay messages or chase a schedule. After a Colorado hail event, when reroofs move fast and dozens of companies are running behind, that's the part that keeps the job from dragging into 5-6 weeks of lost production. -
My installer's gone — can you still detach and reset my system?
Yes. We handle every brand and every installation, including orphaned systems. The original installer doesn't need to exist.
